Have Fun and Achieve Success

When I was younger, I tried to get into sports. I signed up for a gym membership. I looked up the best ways to work out, what to eat, what to focus on. The usual stuff one does when they've never worked out.

When I started going to the gym, I went there with a friend. I had enough motivation to go and felt good. Physically and mentally.

But at some point, my friend stopped going. And after a while, so did I.

At that moment, it wasn't clear to me why that happened. I thought working out wasn't my thing. If I can't motivate myself to do it, it sure means that I don't enjoy working out, right?

After that, I tried two more times to go to a gym. Both attempts turned out the same way as the first.

Was I not cut out for this? Would I never be able to live a healthy life because of my lack of motivation?

Luckily no. That wasn't the case. The problem was, I wasn't having any fun.

Two things helped me to start working out again. Those were choosing exercises I enjoy and working out at home. Now, I don't have to go to a gym and experience everything unpleasant1 that comes with that.

It turns out that I enjoy physical activities2. But I don't want to visit a gym. For me, gyms are not great. And, it turns out, I don't need them.

I'm in healthier shape, physically and mentally, and have fewer complaints. All because I found a way to have fun.

And the same goes for most things in life.

My first programming language was Java. I didn't enjoy writing Java. I still don't. Writing Java felt awful to me. It still does. That resulted in me not enjoying writing code. I didn't know any better.

I wasn't having fun.

Later, I had to use TypeScript, HTML, and CSS for a university course. As disliked as JavaScript may be, it did spark my love for programming.

I could have different interests now if I never had to try again. I'd be looking at a different career path and not Software Engineering. I would still try to find out what I want to be.

Many things need more than one attempt before considering them not worth doing. Especially those that have many aspects to them.

The same goes for this blog. My initial idea was to write about things I learned. It turns out that isn't what is fun to me. I want to write about whatever.

I may be bad at it right now. But it is the same with working out, programming, and learning in general. I will keep doing it and improving because I'm having fun. And because of that, I will be happier, better, and, in my eyes, successful.

  1. I hate waiting for a machine or a place to free up. I want to do my thing and finish. Also, I'm not a fan of earbuds or anything in or around my ears that emits sound. So I'm forced to listen to the music in the gym and some heavy-lifters screaming. That's not a pleasant experience for me. ↩︎

  2. I go bouldering every week and prefer walking or biking when possible. I also love playing table tennis, basketball, or whatever else with friends. ↩︎
